I have only watched the first season of Lost back in 2004...After watching the finale tonight I am more lost than ever. Can someone please explain to me the entire series in a nut shell so that I could understand the finale? Thanks in advance.

E.V. say : Their plane crashed because a guy who'd been entrusted with protecting the island for a long time needed to find some other suitable candidates to take over his role once he was inevitably eventually defeated by the man in black (his brother) who would try to leave the island and spread the evil (he is also the smoke monster and inhabits John Locke's body in season 6). Stuff went down on the island, a lot of stuff. It was found to have crazy magnetic forces that could cause time and space to shift. With this, some of the people found themselves on the island during different times in the past whereas others eventually made it off the island and went about leading their lives and were then known by the world as the Oceanic 6 after having survived a plane crash that the world thought left no survivors. These people spent three years off the island and some had troubled lives. But the island was obviously not just any island, so it drew them back with the help of one of the guys who'd stayed on the island, John Locke, who eventually went back and convinced them to all return (they could only get into another plane crash if they were all together on another plane and happened to travel over a special magnetic field or something). John died before the others could make their way back to the island, but another guy who came back from the island (Ben) convinced them to bring his body anyway. So their plane crash landed on the island and there they eventually found their other people. Jack became Jacob's replacement and figured out how to finally kill the man in black (now masquerading as John Locke). Before dying, he passed on the role to Hurley. Some of the others left the island on the plane. Although not shown, they lived out their lives in the "real world" till their natural death, as did Hurley and the others who stayed on the island. Jack died shortly after saving the island, as you saw. Basically, the people we knew and saw lived out their lives and once they had all died, at some point in time, they were in heaven, a sequence which we actually started seeing in series 6 when we saw them on flight 815 where the plane did NOT crash. In this sequence, they all had the life they deep down always wanted, but we didn't know at the time that this was actually their "heaven". Some had strong memories of the island and the realisation that all those people that were together on the island and impacted each other's lives had to be brought together again in order to move on. This went down in the church. Presumably, other people who impact different people's lives go to different "churches" and having different "heaven" sequences. "Moving on" is open to interpretation.
That really is a nutshell. Obviously there is a whole deal more to it, but there you go.

k so they all died, but when, on the plane crash, and if they all died what happened to that black boy and his dad(cant remember their names) i didn't see them in the church.

Lots of people were missing...guess they only had so much money to bring them back!
I at least thought they might make them all return to the island to become a new batch of "the others" and make it so no one that had died had actually died. I also didn't get how Benjamin Linus decided he wasn't going to go inside (as if he decided he wasn't dead!) Or how Anna Lucia took money to help Kate, Syide and Desmond escape but when asked, Hurley said "no, she's not with us", yet she died before the rest of them did. Or how Aaron is there as a baby, but he's in the parallel universe as a toddler with his grandmother. Oh, this list could go on...
Yeah, the last 6 years was a great ride, but the ending is a big disappointment and didn't do the 6 years justice.

Jack's death at the end is how he really died but the rest died at another time which was unknown when or how. The people at the church I guess all wanted to be together when they die cause they all cared for each other. What i don't understand is what the island was? How can you not explain what the main part of your show was that is the main question.
